The RSGISLAB is a teaching facility that offers students and faculty the chance to participate in labs and training exercises and workshops that are designed to help non-users begin using GIS software and existing users to expand their skills in such areas as understanding cartographic design and production, remote sensing and GPS. Short courses in GIS, MSc*/MPhil and Ph.D levels. During vacations, most of our students are afforded the opportunity of doing internship at several instituitions which helps them to apply the knowledge they have acquired to real world situations. Below are some of the interesting  internship reports from our students.

My internship started after I received a letter from the Town and Country Planning Department  of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). I started the internship on Tuesday the 13th June, 2017 and reported to the office by 8am. From the administration of the I was then directed to the department known as the Street Naming and Property Addressing Unit of the AMA/Town and country planning. After being introduced to the staff of the department, I was then asked to report to that office for my daily work routine. All the staff were very happy and welcomed me very well.

From 5th June 2017 to 7th July 2017, I did an internship with geological survey department.This internship was part of a semester course; Introduction to geographic information system taken in the University of Ghana, Legon. The main objective of this internship was to enable students to practice what they have been taught in a professional working environment. The geological survey department was founded in 1913 and at the moment works under the Ministry of Lands and natural resources. The department is the repository of the country’s geosciences database, it is known to generate, collect, store and archive relevant geoscientific data and give out this information to the government, industries and the public at large. It is therefore responsible for the country’s mineral resource potential studies.

I am a Geography student, studying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and as part of my course it is required that I intern with a group or company that works with Geographic Information Systems. I started my internship on the 7th of June 2017 at the Town and Country Planning Headquarters. The training begun with a discussion and explanation of GIS and some basic terms used in the field. WEEK 1: Our supervisor, Mr. Dominic Asiedu took us through an orientation on how work is done in the various offices. We were later introduced to the staffs of the department; the Regional Surveyor, known as Mr. Robert Hackman, Mr. Emmanuel Lartey as the Deputy Surveyor and Mr. Kweku Adey Blankson as the Chief examiner. We were made aware of the four (4) divisions in the Commission. They are; the Survey and Mapping division, Land Evaluation and Board division, Land Title Registration, and the Public and Vested Land Management division. We were also made known of two other districts of the lands commission at Bibiani and Tarkwa headed by Mr. Nii Quaye and Sir. Albert respectively.
